Apples, Oranges, and Grapefruits by Bob Shaver

Bob is frustrated by the numerous job rejections he is receiving upon college graduation even though he has several years of military and work experience, three undergraduate degrees, and many awards. This situation helps him realize that job fit is more important than being the best candidate. The point of the story is “find the fruit that fits.”

Did You Hear What I Intended? by Joan Gillman

Joan accompanies her mother on a 14-day tour of Hong Kong, China, and Japan. At the airport in Shanghai, Joan asks a question of a tour group member, which, by his facial expressions, she knows he misinterprets. Consequently, she becomes embarrassed and self-conscious. The point of the story is “carefully choose your words.”
